My Toddler's Favorite Foods {Toddler Time Tuesday}

Friends, I have obviously failed at the weekly link-up post. I thought I had it in me to be diligent and post every single week. I honestly think my success rate would have been higher if my children had managed to stay healthy this winter. We are on week six of one or both of them (or all of us) being sick, and I am desperately hoping the end is near!

So, please take my mind off how many times I have wiped snot off someone's face today and let's have a fun discussion - about toddler food!

I wrote a post awhile back about what to feed a toddler, expecting that my kids would continue to eat the lovely variety represented and expand their taste buds often. HA. Apparently, that's not the way it works around here.

Lincoln has decided recently that he is not a fan of really anything. We battle over foods like pizza, chicken nuggets, and macaroni and cheese. Obviously I'm not being a food dictator when those are the options set before him! Sometimes he loves them and will eat with no reserve - and other times, he flat out refuses. Lately the only things he has actually wanted to eat are toast, crackers, and more toast.

Addie has a wider palate at the moment, thankfully. She refuses most grains and prefers to devour bits of most things offered - but she primarily prefers broccoli or cheese. She frequently asks for cheese at meal times.

Both kids are still eating me out of house and home with their applesauce consumption, and they will both nurse or eat sugar at any given opportunity. I know they aren't starving, but I wish I had more tricks to get them to enjoy eating healthy things like vegetables. I can only make muffins so often!

Now it's your turn! Link up a post below talking about your toddlers and their food habits. I'd love to hear some tips to inspire healthy eating habits!

Time to Get Dressed! {Toddler Time Tuesday}

Kids clothes. They're beyond adorable. Mini versions of the latest fashions look so much cuter than anything I happen to try on in a fitting room.

My favorite kid brands are Carter's, Osh Kosh, and The Children's Place (I'm a little beyond obsessed with their stretchie pajamas). If it were up to me, my kids would always be wearing clothes from these places. And most of the time? They are.

But even at the ages of three (Lincoln) and one (Addie), these kids have minds of their own when it comes to fashion. Okay, maybe not fashion. But they certainly have opinions on what they think they should wear.

Given the opportunity, Lincoln would just wear the same outfit forever. He is not particularly attached to any of his clothing (unless it has a firetruck on it), but heaven help us all when it is time to get dressed in the morning or put on pajamas at night. You would think it was the end of the world; that we were ripping away his best friend and only comfort in the world when we dare to remove an article of clothing from his body. This has been a pretty consistent pattern for a long time now - I'm sure he will eventually outgrow it.

Addie, on the other hand, actually seems to enjoy getting dressed and wearing specific pieces of clothing. She is most attached to any shirt that has a princess on it (she has a Rapunzel shirt, as well as one with Belle, Ariel, and Cinderella. I should probably get her a Princess Peach shirt to appease Daddy) or any ruffly, twirly princessy skirt.

She also is a little bit obsessed with her fashionable hair accessories. A few days ago, we were heading downstairs to get in the van when Addie suddenly reached up and patted her head desperately. After a few seconds, I realized she was looking for a headband. This crafting mama was pretty proud.

Now it's your turn! Link up a post below sharing about the clothes your toddlers insist on wearing. I've heard stories - I know some of you have funny tales to share.

9 of the Best Free Apps for Early Preschoolers {Toddler Time Tuesday}

Lincoln loves my phone. Loves it. His primary opportunity to play games is the early morning when Addie is still asleep on top of me and I need him to not jump on her and/or wake her up.

In spite of how little we actually play apps, we have accumulated quite a collection of them! Some are more popular than others. Some are more educational than others. I do strive for every app to be educational in some way.

So without further ado, here are our favorite nine free (and cheap) apps for toddlers and early preschoolers!

-Animal Train for Toddlers - Yomio. The full version of this app is $2.99 and it's one that I am glad we purchased. This is just a fun little train featuring interactive animals on each screen. I like the background music - it's not annoying - and we have fun identifying each animal and the sounds they make.

-I Hear Ewe - Animal Sounds for Toddlers - Claireware Software. This freebie was the first game Lincoln really enjoyed. It's very simple, but it's great for a little one just learning to use a touch screen. Lincoln naturally skipped right over the animals once he figured out there was a vehicle section.

-Kids Trains & Transportation - Puzzle for Toddlers - Pixel Envision.
and
-Kids Car, Trucks & Construction Vehicles - Puzzles for Toddlers - Pixel Envision. Both of these apps feature vehicle puzzles in varying styles, with balloons to pop after each level is complete. This is one of our most popular apps - Lincoln plays it over and over again. We have the free version of one and the full version of the other. The free version comes with a nice selection of puzzles!

-Disney Puzzle Packs - Disney. There are a variety of puzzle styles and multiple Disney character options in this collection of puzzles. Lincoln especially loves the matching games. The free version includes one puzzle for each character. The full upgrade is $9.99. You can read my full review for more details.

-My Vehicle Universe - An Interactive Educational Game - Kids Games Club by TabTale. We had the free version of this app for a long time - it comes with a four of the sections of vehicles. Lincoln really enjoys it, so we upgraded to the full version. There are multiple activities included, but his favorite is matching the cars in the moving puzzle.

-My Little Town: Toddler's Seek & Find (In The Morning). An interactive activity book (2+). - wonderkind.
-My Zoo Animals: Toddler's Seek & Find - An interactive activity book. - wonderkind.
-Tiny Firefighters - wonderkind.

Some of my very favorite apps are developed by wonderkind. We have the full version of Tiny Firefighters and it keeps Lincoln entertained for quite awhile. These are unique apps that allow a child to interact with the imaginary world that is presented. You just tap the screen and a world of possibilities is opened as each character (and most of the buildings/backgrounds) moves around or speaks. I love the consistent design between all of the apps and want to add more of these to our collection! We just have the free versions of My Zoo Animals and My Little Town. The freebies each feature one of three possible interaction scenes.

Now it's your turn! Link up a post below featuring your favorite free (or cheap) toddler apps. We're always looking for new favorites.

Our Favorite Books Right Now {Toddler Time Tuesday}

I used to have a monthly reading corner recurring post. I never intended for it to disappear, but after our library book incident, reading tanked around here for a few months. I never got back into the swing of the post once we had regained some interest in reading - but I think I've decided it's time to bring it back. It's ridiculous that my last favorite book post was in July.

So for now, I want to touch on a few of our most recent favorite books. I'll work on getting a new graphic for the Reading Corner post and give it a grand re-appearance at the end of the month!

1. Sofia the First: First Look & Find. Disney Junior. Both Lincoln and Addie are obsessed with these Look & Find titles! Lincoln has most of the item locations memorized at this point and Addie finds far more than you would think a 14-month-old might!

2. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: On the Go First Look & Find. Disney Junior.

3. I See You In The Ocean. Kidsbooks, LLC. We received this book for Christmas and it has been an outstanding favorite. The kids love the googly eyes. I love the peek-a-boo characters.

4. It's a Small World: Furry Friends. Brooke Dworkin. This book, inspired by Disney's It's a Small World ride, is just beyond cute. It has touch-and-feel animals on every page and Addie loves it.

5. That's Not My Princess.... Usborne, Fiona Watt. Part of me wants to start (yet another) home business and sell Usborne books. I want to own every "That's Not My..." book. Every single one.

6. That's Not My Kitten.... Usborne, Fiona Watt. I love them all.

7. Curious George at the Zoo. H. A. Rey. This was one of Addie's birthday gifts and it has already been read to near death.

8. Destruction series. Erin Edison. Lincoln adores this set of 4 books - Blow It Up!, Knock It Down!, Crush It!, and Shred It! Have you entered the giveaway to win a set yet? It ends February 14.

9. Little People: What Do People Do? Fisher Price Reader's Digest, Matt Mitter. Another Christmas gift, this book is overflowing with little flaps to lift and it occupies Lincoln for ten minutes at a time.

10. Firehouse! Mark Teague. Anything involving a firetruck is a hit in our house. This is a new favorite.

11. Mike the Knight: The Triple Trophy Triumph. adapted by Tina Gallo. Lincoln really likes Mike the Knight - we don't have any DVDs or toys, but we look at this book all the time! He won't usually sit for us to read the whole thing - but he loves it anyway.

12. Curious George and the Firefighters. Margret & H.A. Rey. This is a book checked out from the library - we're trying hard to keep it from getting ripped. But, as previously mentioned, anything with a firetruck is a success!

13. A Treasury of Curious George. Margret & H.A. Rey. This was another Christmas gift (we received so many lovely books this year) and it was the first picture book that Lincoln actually sat through in its entirety. It contains six different Curious George stories, and some of them I even remember from childhood.

Now it's your turn! Link up a post below featuring your child's favorite books. We're always looking for new favorites.

Bedtime Routines or the Lack Thereof {Toddler Time Tuesdays}

It's not Tuesday anymore, is it? I don't know what's going on this week, but my goodness, I am feeling a little bit overwhelmed. Please bear with me if blogging is a little slow while I try to catch up on life! I'll try not to turn to complete silence, but I make no promises.

Even though it is Wednesday now, I am sharing this post - and I apologize to anyone who has been waiting to link up! I'd still love to hear from you.

Today during Toddler Time Tuesday Wednesday, we're talking about Bedtime Routines - or in my case, the lack thereof!

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating. We do have a routine. It just doesn't work out perfectly ever night, so it seems like maybe we need more structure. Andrew would be happier if we adhered to a very specific time to start the bedtime process every night, but it all depends on when we start eating dinner - which of course depends on when dinner is started - and so on and so on.

But, for what it's worth, here's our routine anyway.

Our general goal is to start bedtime around 7:15-7:30pm. We all head back to the nursery and turn off all the lights except the lamp. Both kids want to nurse before bed, so lately the process has started with this. Lincoln will nurse for a few minutes and then ideally, read a book with Daddy while Addie nurses.

In reality, while Addie is nursing, he is usually running around the room or jumping on his bed or dragging out toys that were just put away.

Addie usually does better about reading with Daddy when it is not her turn to nurse.

Once both of them have had the opportunity to nurse, we start changing clothes. Addie gets her nighttime diaper and pajamas on first, and then she and Daddy head downstairs until Lincoln is asleep. I have yet to figure out how on earth to get a child to go to sleep without me, so it's just part of our process.

Lincoln and I then head to the bathroom, where we brush his teeth, wash his hands and face, and try to go potty. We are on the verge of potty training, but I have not given it a real attempt yet. He's getting used to the idea, at least, by going once each night. We strongly dislike having to change diapers and sheets in the middle of the night, so it's an attempt to keep his diaper less soggy throughout the night. It doesn't always work, but hey. We're trying.

After he has gone (or tried to go) potty, we go back to his bedroom and get him into his pajamas. He usually is pretty insistent about which socks he is willing to wear to bed. Usually before we turn off the light, we say a bedtime prayer (some nights he contributes a lot to this, other nights he says "NO NO NO NO NO!") and his first Bible memory verse. Right now, he is obsessed with all of his Nintendo Super Mario Bros. plush toys, and insists that he needs "all the guys" in bed with him. Which is interesting, since he also wants me in his bed when he is falling asleep.

It gets a little crowded in there. Other necessities are his lion pillow and his firetruck blanket. He usually falls asleep pretty quickly once we are settled in bed.

I sneak away once he is sound asleep and take charge of Miss Addie, who could be in any state of emotion by that point - happy, playful, somber, or downright angry - depending on how much she has napped that day. She and I hang out on the couch, nursing until she falls asleep. This takes maybe thirty-forty minutes, after which time I am (lately) lucky if I can transfer her to the crib.

She tends to average somewhere between forty-five minutes and two hours in the crib, depending on the night. Last night, it was twenty minutes - thus why this post is a day late. Once she is awake, it's pretty useless to get her back down, so she just nurses back to sleep on me and hangs out on the couch until we go to bed.

Like I said - it's not really the best routine - as far as routines go. But it's what works for us right now, so I wanted to keep a memory of it anyway. One of these days, they won't need me quite so much and I will long for these times. I know this is true - even if I can't really see it right now.

Now it's your turn! Link up a post about your bedtime rituals below.

Toddler Time Tuesdays: Favorite Indoor Activities

Winter days with toddlers can be adventurous and fun - but sometimes, they are intimidating and long. Staying in a small house with small people day after day...well, let's just say everyone gets tired of each other pretty quickly. Whether you're stuck inside due to a Snowmageddon storm or because you have a newborn or just because it's really cold, you need to have an arsenal of great indoor toddler activities on hand!

One of our favorite activities lately is playing with math toys like this set of Bear Family Counters. I picked up a set of bear counters from a discount deal site several months ago, thinking that they might be a fail - but oh my goodness, Lincoln loves them.

There are all sorts of creative games to play with these things. So far, we've done mostly color matching and sorting by size. I usually just break out some Tupperware or muffin tins and let him sort them as he sees fit. Our set has three different sizes of bears, so we like to split them up into sections by size and color.

I'm planning to try out some new activities soon, like these pattern strips and measuring sheets. There's really a huge world of possibility with these colorful little tools. I imagine we will use them well into our early homeschooling years. I think it would be fun to have a kid-friendly balance scale to use as a teaching tool, as well.

The only downside to this activity is that it's a little too advanced for Addie to participate. The bears are restricted to her naptime, since more than once I have caught her eating them. We have a set of transportation counters to give Lincoln for his birthday next month - based on how much he loves these bears and his obsession with trucks, I assume we'll have a hit.

Toddler Time Tuesday: Meet Lincoln and Adelaide!

Well, I had good intentions. When you start a new blog series, it's not ideal to wait until the last two hours of the day to get the post up. Hopefully anyone who wants to link up will forgive me! I'm leaving the linky open through Saturday so you have plenty of time to join the fun!

Without further ado, welcome to the very first Toddler Time Tuesdays Blog Hop at Director Jewels! My goal is to meet other mamas who are in the same boat as myself - raising little ones who are not quite babies, but not quite "big kids" yet either - and create a way for us to share the quirks, trials, and joys of our little ones. If you have toddlers, please stop by each week and link up!

Today's topic is easy - since it's our first week, we're Introducing Our Toddlers!

I have two of the sweetest and most rambunctious children on the planet. Meet Lincoln and Adelaide!

These two are a barrel of fun. They are mostly best friends, though sometimes he almost kills her with love. She chases him around the house and giggles gleefully when he jumps over her or runs circles around her while she sits on the floor.

Lincoln will be three in February. I'm not sure if that means he will be a preschooler, but I'm not really accepting that term yet - so we're sticking with toddler. He loves cars, trucks, graham crackers, spaghetti, RUNNING, Scooby Doo, Super Mario Bros., reading books, and any sort of emergency vehicle - especially firetrucks.

He gives big hugs that make my heart feel so full. He says "Mommy hold me up!" when he wants me to lift him. He says "OH yes" to almost anything - he's such a happy little guy.

And the hands-on-his-mouth excited expression? MY FAVORITE.

Adelaide turned one in November. She is a sassy little miss with a mind of her own. She's been walking since ten months, so she's pretty sturdy on those chubby legs. She loves dogs ("woofs"), owls ("who-who"s), climbing on our fireplace, anything Lincoln has in his hands, princesses, and baby dolls.

She rarely sleeps unless I am holding her. She "gives loves" by resting her head on your shoulder, tucking her arms beneath her and squeezing herself into you. She nods or shakes her head when asked a question and knows what she wants all the time. She would read books for hours and really is content as long as she's allowed to be involved in our daily chaos.

It's crazy, beautiful madness around here and even though sometimes I feel like I might lose my mind, I love it! What a blessed mama I am, to share my life and my world with these tiny little people.

What most of my photos actually look like.

Now it's your turn! Introduce me to your babies and link up below! Don't forget to grab the Toddler Time Tuesdays button for your post.

Toddler Time Tuesdays: New Weekly Link-Up!

I didn't make resolutions this year, but I have made a somewhat conscious effort to be more intentional with this, my little piece of the web. I thought it might be fun to start a weekly link-up to share stories about the fun miniature humans I spend my days entertaining. Since I'm sure some of you are in the same place - keeping up with toddlers all day - I'm sure you have stories to share as well!

So, here's the deal. Every Tuesday, we'll have a themed link-up to talk about our toddlers. I'll provide a theme and you can link up any relevant post - old or new. Those are all the rules I have for now but I'll reserve the right to add more if needed! My post will (hopefully) go live sometime on Monday evening to give you plenty of time to join the party!

I hope you'll consider joining in next week for our first link-up! Here are the topics for the first few weeks. Have a suggestion for something we should all share? Send me an email or leave a comment with your idea!
