Cook Up Some Imagination with The Queen's Treasures {Vintage Stove Review + Giveaway}

Disclosure: I received a sample toy to review. No other compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.

When I was nine years old, I received one of the most treasured gifts of my childhood: a doll named Molly. She was quickly promoted to the highly coveted position of favorite toy and spent the next several years being lovingly dragged with me everywhere. I dressed like her, I pretended my best friends had the same names as her best friends (seriously), and naturally, I poured over the magazines depicting her collection of accessories and outfits and made long wishlists of all of the things I thought she needed to have.

While I did receive a lot of items for my doll collection (maybe even too many - but I honestly did play with them), I never really had any large furniture items to enhance her world. I made up plenty of things for her to play with and all was well - but that doesn't mean I was not excited out of my mind when this particular review item arrived at my door this month!

Yes, even twenty years after my beloved doll entered my world, I can't wait until my daughter is old enough for me to pass down my doll collection to her. And while I don't want her thinking that she needs every accessory on the market, I will definitely be turning to The Queen's Treasures for some beautifully designed, historically accurate outfits and furniture pieces.

Founded by "Queen" Joann Cartiglia, this small business based in historic Stroudsburg, PA has grown quickly with the national demand for 18" doll clothing, accessories, furniture and the "wow" factor. The company's Bake Shoppe won the Top Toy for 2013 for Creative Play from Creative Child Magazine.

I find the selection of historical playthings so refreshing! When I was a kid, I devoured every piece of historical fiction I could find, and loved pretending to be from an earlier, simpler time. There are plenty of 18" dolls that offer modern attire and accessories, but I find the historically accurate collections to be so much more vivid and endearing. I hope that my daughter feels the same way!

We received the Vintage Style Stove for review. It is sized for 18" dolls and features wooden construction that is painted in cream to represent the enameled look of years gone by. There are four stove top "burners" (they don't actually heat - no worries), a main oven with removable baking rack, a broiler, and compartments for utensils and warming. With four compartments altogether, there is a lot of space for pretend baking to take place. The Stove is 9 3/8" tall.

The Stove is part of the 2015 design series, which features life during WWI. Outfits and accessories from the brave Salvation Army Doughnut Girls, vintage stoves and an antique sewing machine are samples of the available designs for this year.

The attention to detail on this piece is excellent. I love that each cabinet opens and closes with just a gentle tug. All but the compartment on the top right are equipped with a magnetic latch to keep the door in place.

The attention to detail is lovely and I can tell that this is a quality piece that should stand up to many hours of little girls playing with it! It is sturdy and heavy enough that it will not fall over with just a bump.

Does your daughter have an 18" doll? Would she love this accessory?

Make sure you follow The Queen's Treasures on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest for all of the latest updates and new product releases!

Happyville Smart Mat + Wonky Wheels from PlaSmart - #HolidayGiftGuide2014

Disclosure: I received sample products for review. No other compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.

Our collection of toy vehicles is vast. And when I say vast...I mean kind of overwhelming. Lincoln doesn't play with cars quite as much as he used to, but there are still little cars everywhere in my house a good portion of the time. I've always wanted to have a nice road map that Lincoln could use to drive his cars on, but every time I've come across one, they have been pretty small. When you have 200+ cars....you need some space to drive!

So, you can imagine my delight when I was given the chance to review the Happyville Smart Mat from PlaSmart. Measuring in at 78"x46", this floor mat is perfect for our huge collection of little vehicles to call home.

Made to last through many a toddler driving toys and crawling rambunctiously across it, the Happyville Smart Mat features quality, coated EVA foam that is immensely brighter than any other "road rugs" I have seen on the market. The colors are vibrant and inviting, and both of my kids had eyes as wide as saucers the first time I pulled out this mat for them to play.

Driving cars along the windy roads of the play mat has quickly become a favorite pastime for Lincoln and Addie - and even Daddy gets in on the action sometimes!

The mat takes up a fairly large space in our living room, but it rolls up for storage so easily that it has never been even a minor issue. My only concern is that my kids may use the cars to poke holes through the foam - we have a couple of spots on our mat where it is obvious someone felt the need to have an attack car strike. In spite of my destructive little ones, however, the mat has held up extremely well.

Kids (and grown ups) of all ages can enjoy this mat, and with a $29.99 price tag, it's not a steep investment!

There is also a Castletown Smart Mat available. Either mat would make an excellent playroom addition, or fit nicely into a classroom play corner! We think it's great fun to drive cars around our Smart Mat all day...wouldn't you?

PlaSmart was also kind enough to send along a Wonky Wheels Finger Car for Lincoln. They must have read his mind - when he saw it, he said "it's blue because my favorite color is blue!" and proceeded to examine every inch of it. He automatically knew that the indentation on top was meant for his finger, and he has spent hours since that day driving this car around - on not only the Smart Mat, but every surface of our house!

Wonky Wheels (which he calls his "wonky car") has become one of his favorite toys and he brings it along with us on adventures outside the house all the time - it was even the sole toy he picked to bring on vacation this December! If that's not love, I don't know what is. I love that the car seems to move in a new way each time you play with it, and it helps develop motor skills. Toys that help kids learn without realizing they're learning are the best...don't you think? Wonky Wheels would make a great, unique stocking stuffer!

We love our Happyville Smart Mat and the Wonky Wheels car! Visit PlaSmart to find out more about these and other great titles. You can also follow along on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, G+, and LinkedIn for all the latest updates.

VTech Toys: Helping Kids Reach Milestones + Giveaway {Santa's Little Helper Hop} - #HolidayGiftGuide2014

Disclosure: The VTech product, information, and giveaway have been provided by VTech. No other compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.

Welcome to the Santa’s Little Helper Giveaway Hop, hosted by the Blogging Mamas Network!

Who couldn't use a little bit of help around the Holidays? For this blog event, I have teamed up with  a whole bunch of your favorite bloggers - sit back and let us be your Santa’s Little Helper! We're giving away prizes that just about anyone would want to see under the tree! You might find the perfect gift for a little one on your list – or even for yourself, so hop around to all the blogs on the linky at the bottom of this post and don't miss the Santa's Little Helper Grand Prize from Step2!

If there is one thing I've learned in my (almost) four years as a mom, it's that kids develop at their own pace - and none of them is exactly the same. It can be really hard not to play the comparison game when your child is the one who isn't potty trained yet...or isn't speaking in full sentences...or doesn't sleep through the night. I've struggled with this a lot, but I am figuring out that there's just no way to know how quickly a kid will pick up a new skill. Sometimes, the best we as moms can do is to encourage them, make learning fun, and (eventually) seek outside help if needed.

Milestones seem to always be happening around here! Lately, we're marveling at how much Addie talks - though when Lincoln was the same age, he was barely speaking! I have two chatterboxes on my hands right now...it's amazing to me how differently they have worked on their language skills.

VTech has put together a panel of experts including Dr. Lise Eliot, Early Childhood Mental Development Expert, to create Developmental Milestones to help parents as they strive to understand how their children are advancing. The milestones are broken down in ages that range from newborn to nine years old - and each age range is divided by three categories of learning:
-Language and Cognitive
-Social and Emotional Development
-Physical and Motor

The categories explain different characteristics and developments that your child is faced with at a specified age and is then followed by recommended products that best cater to your child.

Dr. Lise Eliot took some developmental and Milestones questions from fellow bloggers and I'm sharing a few of her answers below.

Q. As a parent, what are your suggestions on things I can do with my child to help them develop their social and emotional skills? What are ways I can help my child to get the most of their playtime?

A. Social-emotional skills are the bedrock of learning, so good for you for taking an interest in cultivating them in your child.  The best way to promote emotional and interpersonal skills is through interaction--reading, singing and lots of talking with your child.  Make eye contact with him or her. Laugh together.  Direct your child's attention to interesting things in your environment.  When you read together, ask your child questions about the characters' thoughts and feelings. This can help build empathy. Another way to think about it is to use books or videos as a stepping stone for dialogue with your child.  It's the two-way, back-and-forth sharing of words and feelings that build emotional and communication skills.  Playtime has ample opportunity to do this, whether you are visiting the zoo, finger-painting, or playing with toys.  Take every opportunity to talk about the feelings and relationships among characters your child is drawing or playing with.

Q. As a stay-at-home mom, I feel like I'm responsible for most of my toddler's learning the first couple of years. How can I ensure that I'm teaching him all he needs to know? What are the best games or play to help him learn basics things like numbers, colors, words, etc.?

A. Children learn through play, so almost any activity is a learning opportunity for your child.   Show your child how to count banana slices at lunch time, or toothbrush strokes at bedtime.  Read ABC books to him to teach letter sounds and recognition.  But don't worry too much about academic skills in younger children.  Most important at this age is for children to learn the joy of discovery.  Try to avoid drilling exercises (like flashcards) and instead focus on learning about the real world around him--animals, people, vehicles, music, art--whatever you encounter through books or the world outside that excites your child.  When kids find a passion and get absorbed in it, early literacy and number skills follow easily.

Q. How do doctors come up with specific milestones for each age group? What are some milestones for older age groups (up to age 9)?

A. Infant developmental milestones have been cataloged by studying thousands of babies from all walks of life.  In healthy children, the various milestones emerge in a predictable sequence and time, give or take a few weeks or months.  This predictable pattern is due to the maturation sequence of the developing brain, along with the typical sequence of practice most babies engage in, given their gradually growing strength and coordination.  Some milestones you can look for as your child gets older include: able to draw a circle at age 3, asking lots of "Why" questions at age 4, knowing his or her letters at age 5, tying shoes at age 6, reading aloud fluently at age 7, and a big spurt of social independence beginning at 8-9 .

What milestone has your child achieved lately?

Green Toys Safe Seas Seaplane Giveaway {#SummerSweeping Hop}

Disclosure: I received a toy for review, but no other compensation was received and all opinions expressed are my own.

It's the 2nd Annual Summer Sweeping to Win Giveaway Hop - yay! This event is hosted by the Blogging Mamas Network. Stop by each of the blogs participating in this hop for a chance to win a $25 or greater prize. Wouldn't it be fun if you won?!

It's not a secret that my three-year-old, Lincoln, loves vehicles, so when I had the chance to take a peek at the Safe Seas Seaplane set from Green Toys, I knew he was going to love it.
I've made a lot of changes in our home lately, limiting the unhealthy things that we put into our bodies, especially. I've also started taking a closer look at some of our toys - not all play things are created equally, and there are some items I've decided to eliminate from our collection due to the way they are made. I've heard of Green Toys Inc. many times before now, but this seaplane is the first from this brand to make its way into our house. I wasn't sure we really needed another vehicle in our house - but I knew Lincoln would enjoy it! And now that we have it, I know it won't be our last Green Toy!

Green Toys features a fantastic line of classic toys which constructed from recycled plastic and other environmentally friendly material - like milk jugs. How cool is that? Each toy from this company contains no traceable amounts of Phthalates or BPA and is packaged in an environmentally friendly package. There are no zip ties to cut or annoying strings to detach. The toys are designed for years of rough toddler play. Our seaplane has already survived many crashes at the hands of Lincoln, and I'm sure will see many more - yet it looks brand new. When my kids inevitable drag it outside, I don't have to worry about it going for a splash dive in our water table - because Green Toys are dishwasher safe! That alone is a reason that this mom can heartily recommend this company!

This SafeSeas Seaplane is a limited edition (in a special color) and comes with a copy of Joel Harper's children's book All the Way to the Ocean (Freedom Three Publishing). Lincoln loves it and Addie enjoys flying it around the room, too. Overall, it has been a big hit in our house and I know that I'll be taking a peek at Green Toys' selection when birthdays and Christmas roll around.

Make sure you stop by Green Toys on Facebook or Twitter for all the latest news and updates.

Step2 Neat & Tidy Cottage II Playhouse Giveaway

When I was a kid, I loved my playhouse. I spent hours in that thing, even long after I fit in it without having to be smashed up like a pretzel. My kids have one that they love, too - so I could not resist the chance to join this giveaway and give one of you the chance to have a playhouse, too!

Welcome to the Step2 Neat & Tidy Cottage II Giveaway,
hosted by Viva Veltoro and Thrifty Nifty Mommy and sponsored by Step2!
Viva Veltoro is a Step2 Ambassador and just had the opportunity to review the Neat & Tidy Cottage II, one of Step2's newest products. This realistic playhouse will look great in any backyard because of its charming exterior that resembles stone and wood. Your little one can pretend to cook, clean and welcome guests into their very own house. Check out the Viva Veltoro's full review of the Step2 Neat & Tidy Cottage II to see all of the awesome features of this playhouse.

Details of the Step2 Neat & Tidy Cottage (obtained from the Step2 website):
  • Open design keeps kids visible during playtime
  • Working Dutch door and shutters
  • Interior includes kitchen seat, fireplace, wall clock, play phone, built-in shelves, kitchen table and faucet

  • Molded-in flower box is perfect for real or fake flowers (flowers not included)

I think my favorite feature is that you can actually plant real flowers in the flower box! How fun would that be for a little gardener? Right now, my kids would definitely just dump the dirt on the ground...but eventually, I think they would enjoy it.

Strider Bike Classic {Giveaway}

Welcome to the Strider Bike Classic Giveaway!

Sponsored by:  Strider

Hosted by:  Mostly Together Mommy

We don't have a Strider Bike in our house, but I think they look really cool. Lincoln received a tricycle for his third birthday, and he loves it, but he hasn't mastered pedaling yet. I'm sure he'll catch on one of these days, but this seems like a great step between for kids who are learning how to ride a bike!

A Strider Bike is unlike other bikes for kids. It's different in a good way. Strider bikes teach balance and coordination and allow children to build up their confidence until the point when they are ready for a "big kid" bike.

Strider bikes don't have pedals, allowing children to keep their feet on the ground and build both their confidence and their coordination. These bikes have the lowest seat height of any child's bike and also are tested thoroughly for safety. Even better? Strider bikes are all terrain - the tires will never go flat!

Have you tried one of these bikes with your kids?

Giveaway

One lucky winner is going to take home a Strider Bike Classic. Simply enter using the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to all those in the U.S. 18+ and will end on June 6. Good luck, everyone!

Motherhood and Setting New Expectations

When I found out I was pregnant, I expected to have a breezy pregnancy and a healthy glow - with a heaping side of productivity.

I quit my full time job when my baby was two months old, and I assumed that there would be hours of crafts and games with my children, and long nap times in which I could rest and rejuvenate (and work from home).

When my second baby arrived, I said to myself, "how much harder can it be? They will be such good friends."

If you haven't yet guessed - none of those things ended up being completely true. Pregnancy knocked me flat on my back. Working from home is stressful at best, when you are trying to care for and entertain small people. And tiny siblings can be great friends - but they also require a lot of mommy interventions because naturally there is only one toy that is worthy of being played with at any given time.

And today, as I sit nursing that second baby - who doesn't sleep on her own - while my oldest is being brainwashed occupied by the Scooby-Doo complete series box set, I feel frustrated that it's 4:30pm and not enough things have been crossed off my to-do list.

My to-do list is ever increasing, but so are the needs of my children. My spare time is not spent sewing dresses or editing videos or writing scripts or blog posts as I had imagined in my fantasy stay-at-home-mom scenario. Instead, I spend my days taking someone potty for the 15th time since noon or breaking up squabbles over a plastic muffin or pulling someone down off the kitchen table again.

It turns out that being a good mom has very little to do with how many craft projects you can do in a day, but a whole lot to do with how many kisses you can give for the same boo-boo in an hour. It's less about planning educational activities and more about accepting that it's really okay for your kids to sometimes watch a movie while you take a shower.

I struggle with finding a balance and often end the day thinking that I have failed my kids. I need to not worry so much about email and be more concerned with fort-building. There will be time to fill my Etsy shop after the days of being a little firefighter's assistant are long past. I need to be present for my kids 100% of the time - and they deserve more than a half-hearted smile when I am met with reading that super annoying book one more time.

I need to be constantly aware that my expectations cannot be the same as they were before these precious little lives depended upon me. Their thoughts, fears, and feelings need to be first priority right now, even if that means setting aside some of the things that are important to me.

Motherhood and making realistic expectations - it's a fine line to balance. What are your tips for making the most of every moment with your littles, even in the overwhelming moments?

Rethinking Easter: It's Out of Control

Rethinking Easter: It's Out of Control at directorjewels.com #Easter #parenting #kids

It seriously astounds me every time I go shopping in the spring, after the Valentine's Day hype has concluded. I think I must be dreaming when I see 153 different Easter basket (or box or bag or suitcase) designs piled floor to ceiling in the most prominent aisle possible. The accompanying shelves lined with pastel-packaged toys, games, and trinkets are a sad and gaudy interpretation of a holiday that has absolutely nothing to do with bunnies, bonnets, and somewhat vinegar-scented dyed eggs.

And then there's the candy. I can't even talk about all the candy.

I get it. It's fun to give gifts to kids. Birthdays and Christmas don't come around often enough to give your kids the latest toy release that you know they will love. But Easter? It should NOT be an occasion steeped in commercialism and the greed of consumers. Why have we turned this day into a celebration of things?

Easter is about celebrating a risen Savior.

It's a day of remembrance.

What kid is going to be excited about listening to a story about someone who died on a cross if he is greeted at every turn with another chance to hunt for Easter eggs filled with candy? As an adult, I know which one is more important. But my three-year-old son is far more likely to develop expectations about Easter that lead him to care very little about Christ's compassion for the lost.

Some people may say I am overreacting. Perhaps I am, I don't know. I'm fairly new at this mom thing in the grand scheme. But my gut feeling is that Easter baskets mean nothing in the long run, while a relationship with the Savior means everything. Maybe I'll be the unpopular mom my whole life because I just don't find it necessary, helpful, or realistic to indulge my kids with piles of candy and toys on the anniversary of Jesus' death and resurrection each spring. I can invent another reason to give my kids toys in the spring, if I decide it's necessary. But I won't do it on Easter.

I would rather that my children grow up knowing the true significance of the day. And if that means they reach adulthood without a single photo posed on the lap of a giant, somewhat frightening bunny? I truly think they'll survive.

Computer Virus Dolls Plush {Review + Giveaway}

We're longtime fans of GIANTmicrobes and there is not a birthday or holiday that goes by when my hubby does not ask for more plush microbes for his our kids' collection. I was excited to learn that their creator, Drew Oliver, has released a new collection of Computer Virus Dolls.

These very unique plush toys are designed with the 1's and 0's of Binary code (and feature the doll's name in code on the attached ribbon). There are offered in a variety of designs such as Malware, Trojan, Worm, Virus, Bot, Macro, and more. Removing a virus from your computer system is sometimes a feat worthy of a prize - perhaps next time you encounter an issue, you should reward yourself with one of these.

We were sent a Bug plush for review. A bug is a flaw in a computer code that causes a program or electronic device to function improperly. Most bugs cause small aberrations in behavior, which can make them difficult to isolate and correct. Bugs are typically the result of human error made during programming.

Our Bug resides at work with my hubby, reminding him to avoid coding bugs into his web work. Lincoln and Addie thought the Bug was pretty fun to play with, before he headed off to sit on Daddy's desk.

We also received a Worm keychain, and it is super cute! I love that the very unique designs offered  by the company - these are definitely one-of-a-kind gifts!

If you have a hard-to-buy-for tech-savvy person on your gift-buying list, you may want to keep Computer Virus Dolls in mind! They would make a really cute graduation gift for a computer programmer and they are just the right size for stocking stuffers, when the holidays run around.

Winnie the Pooh and McStuffins, Too!

My kids are a little bit obsessed with Disney. That's not a huge secret. I mean, I ponder about the minds of the characters and give away tickets to the Kansas City Disney on Ice show. It's not a normal day around here if we don't play with a princess or a Lightning McQueen.

Addie has two favorites right now that seem to have earned their place of preference over all toys: Winnie the Pooh and Doc McStuffins. We've been sick for the better part of a month (someone, please send spring), so there has been a lot more TV-watching than normal around here. And this little girl of mine thinks she is entitled to watch Pooh and Doc around the clock.

Honestly? I don't mind. I love them both, too. Our TV time is on the decline since we are (finally) feeling better and can play outside in the warmer weather, but I'm still excited about the newest Pooh and Doc releases. After all, I spend a lot of my time watching these shows, too!

It's like Disney can sense how to make my kid happy. Do you know what two of the newest DVD/Blu-ray releases are? Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo and Doc McStuffins: Mobile Clinic.

Addie saw the new Pooh DVD when we were shopping a couple days ago and declared "ROO!!!" No doubt it would be a hit.

I am certainly ready for a new Doc McStuffins episode selection. We own two DVDs and have played them both nearly to death. I can sing the theme song in my sleep - and actually, sometimes Addie does that too. She doesn't say the words, but she knows exactly when to chime in with "Doo-doo-doo" and "Oh-oh-oh." It might be the cutest things ever.

Today, we're singing Pooh and Doc McStuffins songs outside, but I'm keeping these new releases in mind for the next rainy day. Unlike most people, we don't have a cable subscription - so all of the episodes will be completely new to us when we view the DVD!

Are you a Disney fan? What show or movie do your kids love?

Mega Bloks: Finn the Fire Truck {Toy Review}

Disclosure: Mega Bloks sent us this toy to review. No compensation was received and all views expressed are my own.

When Mega Bloks offered to send us a toy from their new fall collection to review, I was excited! Lincoln received the Mega Bloks Play 'n Go Table at his second birthday party, and ever since then, we have spent hours every week playing with these fun brightly-colored blocks! I didn't know what toy we would be receiving, but when I opened the box, I almost squealed in delight - because I knew Lincoln was going to love this toy!

It's no secret that he is obsessed with trucks, and especially "wiretrucks" (one of my favorite words). I could not wait to show him this truck!

And, as expected - he was so excited! He took one look at the box and demanded "Out! Out! Out!" He wasn't happy until it was completely out of the packaging and could be driven around the room.

His reaction was priceless and photos don't do it justice, so instead I'm sharing it via this video.

One of Lincoln's favorite things to do right now is climb aboard the firetruck and propel himself around the room. It is not designed as a riding toy, but that doesn't stop him! We've had so many adventures with Finn - and I know there will be many more to come.

Convenient storage for the 14 included Mega Bloks.

We couldn't be happier with our friendly little fire truck! You can find out more about Firetruck Finn when you visit Mega Blocks!

Thanks to Mega Bloks for sending us this toy to review. No compensation was received and all views expressed are my own (and Lincoln's).
