Pirates on the Farm {Children's Book Review}

Disclosure: I received a sample copy of this book to review. All opinions expressed are my own.

My aunt and uncle own a farm. When I was a kid, I spent weeks at a time visiting "Camp Aunt Janet," where I played to my heart's content in the barn, on the rope swing, and in the expansive garden. There were also several years of my life where I truly believed I was the reincarnation of Laura Ingalls. Suffice it to say - even though I'm a city girl, a part of my heart loves the idea of living the farming life.

I'm pretty sure I would give it up the first time I had to actually clean up an animal stall, but I digress.

Ever on the lookout for good books for my kids to enjoy, my interest was sparked when I came across the title Pirates on the Farm by Denette Fretz, with illustrations by Gene Barretta.

This book is published by Zonderkidz and has a suggested reading level of age 4-8. Lincoln is really starting to enjoy picture books, so I thought we would give it a try.

Naturally, the day I decided to take photos, no one was cooperative.

This book is an imaginative adventure, bringing to life the tale of some swashbuckling pirates who move to the farm right next door to a little girl, her brother, and their parents. Much of the book is spent discussing how her brother loves the pirates - and her mother loathes them.

The pirates build a pirate ship shaped barn, harvest corn with swords, and serve fish stew (eyeballs included) to their guests. All in all, it's a tale that teaches about putting aside judgements based on outward appearance and accepting these unruly new neighbors for the new friends they just might turn out to be.

It's a little bit above Addie's comprehension level yet, but Lincoln is a fan! He loves talking about pirates! And while it may be a bit unlikely that any scallywags will move in next door to us, we'll definitely stay open to the possibility.

Thanks to BookSneeze for my review sample of this book. I received no compensation for posting a review and all views expressed are my own.
