Our Favorite Books Right Now {Toddler Time Tuesday}

I used to have a monthly reading corner recurring post. I never intended for it to disappear, but after our library book incident, reading tanked around here for a few months. I never got back into the swing of the post once we had regained some interest in reading - but I think I've decided it's time to bring it back. It's ridiculous that my last favorite book post was in July.

So for now, I want to touch on a few of our most recent favorite books. I'll work on getting a new graphic for the Reading Corner post and give it a grand re-appearance at the end of the month!

1. Sofia the First: First Look & Find. Disney Junior. Both Lincoln and Addie are obsessed with these Look & Find titles! Lincoln has most of the item locations memorized at this point and Addie finds far more than you would think a 14-month-old might!

2. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: On the Go First Look & Find. Disney Junior.

3. I See You In The Ocean. Kidsbooks, LLC. We received this book for Christmas and it has been an outstanding favorite. The kids love the googly eyes. I love the peek-a-boo characters.

4. It's a Small World: Furry Friends. Brooke Dworkin. This book, inspired by Disney's It's a Small World ride, is just beyond cute. It has touch-and-feel animals on every page and Addie loves it.

5. That's Not My Princess.... Usborne, Fiona Watt. Part of me wants to start (yet another) home business and sell Usborne books. I want to own every "That's Not My..." book. Every single one.

6. That's Not My Kitten.... Usborne, Fiona Watt. I love them all.

7. Curious George at the Zoo. H. A. Rey. This was one of Addie's birthday gifts and it has already been read to near death.

8. Destruction series. Erin Edison. Lincoln adores this set of 4 books - Blow It Up!, Knock It Down!, Crush It!, and Shred It! Have you entered the giveaway to win a set yet? It ends February 14.

9. Little People: What Do People Do? Fisher Price Reader's Digest, Matt Mitter. Another Christmas gift, this book is overflowing with little flaps to lift and it occupies Lincoln for ten minutes at a time.

10. Firehouse! Mark Teague. Anything involving a firetruck is a hit in our house. This is a new favorite.

11. Mike the Knight: The Triple Trophy Triumph. adapted by Tina Gallo. Lincoln really likes Mike the Knight - we don't have any DVDs or toys, but we look at this book all the time! He won't usually sit for us to read the whole thing - but he loves it anyway.

12. Curious George and the Firefighters. Margret & H.A. Rey. This is a book checked out from the library - we're trying hard to keep it from getting ripped. But, as previously mentioned, anything with a firetruck is a success!

13. A Treasury of Curious George. Margret & H.A. Rey. This was another Christmas gift (we received so many lovely books this year) and it was the first picture book that Lincoln actually sat through in its entirety. It contains six different Curious George stories, and some of them I even remember from childhood.

Lincoln's Reading Corner July 2013

The summer started off with a lot of reading, thanks to the summer reading program at our library. We read dozens of books in June, and had reached the point where Lincoln actually asked to read books multiple times a day. Then...he destroyed several library books and reading took a significant hit when all of our library books were promptly returned. We've read books here and there throughout July, but are still having issues with Lincoln leaving them scattered around the house and then walking on them. We'll keep working at learning to care for our books properly and hope that the love for reading continues to grow along the way.

1. My First Book of Things to See.  Against my better judgement, we decided to keep a couple of the new library books Daddy brought home for us this month. This book has lots of common things in a child's world and Lincoln loves to point out the baby animals, trees, flowers, stroller, bikes, clock, ice cream, and more.

2. My First Book of Things to Learn. Similar to #1, this book features animals, colors, shapes, numbers and more. Lincoln spent fifteen minutes reading it with me one day last week - and in Lincoln time, that's impressive!

3. World-Class Wings.  We snagged this book in the Target $1 spot. It's based on the upcoming Disney Planes movie - and if you can get past the fact that it completely spoils the story, it's a cute little five-page read.

4. Hug! A cute book with magnetic arms that kids can use to hug each page, this one has been a hit with both kids.

5. My Book of Letters. Another Target $1 spot find. Lincoln can correctly identify the letters B, I, and N most of the time. No idea why those are more important than any others! Somewhere around here, we have a matching Minnie Mouse colors book, but it has disappeared.

Lincoln's Reading Corner June 2013

Thanks to the library summer reading program (an item we've already crossed off our summer bucket list), reading is back in action around here! We read 72 books just for the reading program, and have had countless re-readings of favorites since then. It's been awesome! It was hard to pick our favorites, but these are some of the books Lincoln has been returning to most often.

1. Noisy Diggers.  We actually have not even read all the way through this book. Lincoln just loves all of the sounds it makes! He will sometimes sit for five minutes just pressing each sound button. And that's a really long time in my little boy's world.

2. Kiki's Blankie. This is a cute little book about a monkey and her blankie, and their inseparable bond. Lincoln isn't quite this attached to any security item, but he does drag blankets around the house almost every day, so I think he can relate.

3. Maisy's Train.  We've mentioned this one in the reading corner before but it is still pretty popular, because it has a train, a mouse, a duck, and a clock. I love books where Lincoln wants to identify every item on every page.

4. Clifford Counts Bubbles. Both kids will listen to any mini Clifford board book multiple times. The big red dog is a big old hit here in our house lately. We're also a little bit obsessed with "bu-ells" (bubbles), so this one is great.

5. Bear and Bee.  I really like this sweet little story about a bear who runs into a bee, but doesn't know what a bee looks like and worries aloud about how scared he is of meeting a frightening bee. The wording is simple, but clever and the illustrations are great. Lincoln knows the sounds that bears ("grrrr") and bees ("BEEEE!!!") make, so that could be part of the reason I love it.

6. Dear Baby, What I Love About You!  This is a book about a little baby girl and all of her sweet baby ways. I like to read it because Lincoln will point and say "baby? mama?" to the illustrations of the baby playing with her mom and it's one of my favorite things about this stage he is in right now.

7. My Truck Is Stuck. I tried to read Lincoln this book last year, around the time he first discovered Little Blue Truck, but he wouldn't give it the time of day. I'm really glad we gave it a second chance, because he loves it right now. I think he's beginning to grasp the concept of counting, so we count the vehicles on every page. Plus, one of his favorite words for the last couple months has been "STUCK!" This book is right up his alley.

8. That's Not My Truck.  While not as popular as #10 on this list, this one has been returned to multiple times in the last few days.

9. Truck Duck.  This book is another of my favorites - just because he is getting better at identifying items and can "read" a couple of the pages in this one all by himself. "Boat Goat" and "Truck Duck" may be some of the simplest rhymes in the lot, but hey - to me, it's almost like he is learning how to read since he's saying the same words that are on the page. Win!

10. That's Not My Car. Oh my goodness, he loves this book! The bumpy, lumpy, scratchy and squashy pieces to touch are his favorites - and even little sister gets in on the grabbing action for this one sometimes. I've lost count of how many times we've read this book lately.

11. Moby Dick. This book by BabyLit is obviously influenced by classic literature. He hadn't been a super big fan of it, but now that he can identify fish and boats by name, he's way more interested. BabyLit is seriously my favorite baby book collection.

12. Lick!. I'm not really sure why this one is so popular, but he is fascinated with seeing all the tongues in this book. Maybe it's because we're learning body parts?

Lincoln's Reading Corner May 2013

I realized a couple weeks ago that I never posted the April reading corner!  I wish I could say it was because I just forgot - but sadly, it was more due to the fact that books have not been quite as popular around here lately.  After our reading frenzy in March, I thought we were on a roll...but I guess I was wrong.

We've been running more errands and having more playdates and generally just leaving the house more often, so I think that may have a little bit to do with the lack of reading. We signed up for the summer reading program at the library, so hopefully that will inspire more reading for us in the next few months!

I don't have a lot of favorite books to mention today, but wanted to share a trend I have noticed when Lincoln looks at books. He's noticing family dynamics! Every time he finds a book with multiple family members pictured, he will point out each one - "dada," "mama," "baby." I think it's really sweet.




My favorite is when he finds a mother figure in a book. The way he looks at me and says "Mama?!" as if to confirm that he has indeed found another mommy in one of his books...it tugs on my heartstrings. I love this boy!

Lincoln's Reading Corner March 2013

I am late posting March's reading corner, but I didn't want to skip it!  There are only a few outstanding favorites this month, but my goodness!  We have been reading a lot.  Some days we will read twenty or thirty books or more.  That is a huge deal around here - I'm so excited!  Addie is getting to be pretty excited to see the pictures in books as well - I may have to update the title of this series pretty soon.

1. Sleepy-Time Fun.  This book is from Disney and features little vignette pages with characters from Toy Story, The Lion King, Bambi and more amid two "main" stories.  One is about how Mickey finds Pluto in a pet shop and the other is about Donald and his nephews.  Cute, original, and comes with a bonus lullaby CD.  My favorite thing about this book is that the pages are thick.  Not quite board book thickness, but enough that I don't have to worry about Lincoln ripping out the pages when I turn my back.

2. Goodnight Moon.  This book has made a huge comeback in our house!  We read it almost every night before bed.  Lincoln loves to point out the clocks, bunny, stars, mouse, house, spoon, bowl, bears, chairs, and of course, the moon. 

3. Everything Goes: 123 Beep Beep Beep.  Daddy found this book at the library and it has been a big hit.  He likes to point at the vehicles on each page while I count them.  The only issue we have is that counting is something he does frequently on the iPad, and he gets mad when the cars don't move when he presses them!

4. Dracula.  This book from Babylit is a little creepy, yet awesome.  It's a counting primer and features wolves, ships, garlic flowers, and coffins (nicely referred to as boxes)!  We taught Lincoln to howl like the wolves and it is ridiculously adorable.

5. Pocoyo and Friends.  Pocoyo is one of our favorite youtube channels, and Lincoln has had fun reading about Pocoyo, Pato, Elly, Loula and Sleepy Bird!

6. My First Truck Board Book.  This book features some obscure trucks in addition to the normal ones - freight truck, logging truck, paver, forklift, etc.  It's a nice one to turn to when you just can't read about garbage trucks or fire trucks anymore!

Lincoln's Reading Corner February 2013

Good news - even with all of the birthday craziness this month, Lincoln seemed to enjoy reading again!  He's still very busy most of the time and doesn't want to sit still for long - but a few of these have been important enough to him that he has brought them to us repeatedly.  I love reading time - since it is one of the few times he is actually calm!

1. Hippo Says Excuse Me.  All right, this one is a stretch.  He's let me read it to him once - because it has a "BUS!!!!"  We have checked out this books and others in the series from the library several times - great set of chunky board books on manners!  Adelaide really enjoyed looking at the pictures in Mouse Says Sorry.

2. Things That Go.  Our favorite thing to do with this book is have Lincoln name all the vehicles.  He knows train, truck, bus, choo-choo, boat, balloon, and bike.  We're still working on scooter, blimp, rollerskates, motorcycle, and trolley.  This particular book is fun because it features more than just the typical car, truck, and train.

3. Little Blue Truck Leads the Way.  We gave Lincoln the board book edition of this favorite for his birthday - and while he's really too busy playing with all the new toys most of the time, he does seem to really enjoy this one.  Whenever we can get him to sit still for twelve seconds, that is.

4. Maisy's Train.  This book has a duck, and a choo-choo, and a clock.  So he is thrilled with it!

5. The Pigeon Loves Things That Go.  I checked this book out from the library because I love Pigeon.  When I worked as a library clerk, I always stopped to read the Pigeon books when they came by my desk.  Hilarious!  And this title has vehicles for my little man - perfect.

6. The Wheels on the Truck.  A little variety on the Wheels on the Bus song - fun book to use for a sing along with your kiddo.

7. Red Truck, Yellow Bus: A Book of Colors.  Another fun book filled with vehicles!  You are probably noticing a theme.

8. Mickey's Play & Learn Piano Songs.  My grandparents gave Lincoln this awesome book for his birthday, and he is really enjoying it.  He doesn't grasp the concept of reading the notes or understanding which key is which yet - but it's a good start to just play with a piano.  And when we eventually start lessons in a few years, we'll pull this book out again for some easy key recognition practice!

9. Storybook Rhymes.  This is a book that's been in our collection for over a year - it's been riding in the van until very recently.  Lincoln looked at it during a car ride and realized that it features the song "Hickory Dickory Dock" - which is used in one of his favorite Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes - Clarabelle's Clubhouse Mooo-sical.  I don't know why, but he is obsessed with clocks right now!  So he now carries this big storybook around, pushing the buttons over and over until he gets to hear the clock song again.

Lincoln's Reading Corner January 2013

After the reading success in December, I was hopeful that we would continue the trend this month with lots of reading!  Unfortunately that hasn't really been the case.  Books have been touch and go, but overall not super popular. 

Here are the few favorites this month!

1. Mickey is Happy.  This library find has been a favorite due to the current obsession with Mickey Mouse in our house!  The illustrations scream '90's, but Lincoln doesn't care.  This is a book of feelings, i.e. Mickey is happy, Goofy is silly, Donald is angry, etc.

2. Peek-a-Boo, I Love You.  Okay, this book was in December's list, too - but it seriously is one of the only books he has wanted to read all month!  The spine is almost completely destroyed now. 

3. Hello, Boston.  We picked up this book at the Old North Church gift shop in Boston last summer.  He really wasn't super interested in it back then, but I wanted him to have a souvenir from his first "big" vacation,  He loves it now though!  I think he likes it mostly because the characters are ducks.  Andrew pointed out that they are disturbing ducks, since they are human-sized and ride the bus with the other "normal" tourists!

4. I'm A Police Officer. I got this book for a quarter at a garage sale.  Can't beat that, right?  It has several pictures that feature police cars.  And we know that a car=instant favorite.

Lincoln's Reading Corner December 2012

Reading has been a bigger success this month than it was in October and November - yay!  We're still reading some old favorites frequently, but a lot of new books have been added to the Lincoln-approved list! 

Side note - we tried really hard to do this 25 Days of Christmas book advent idea.  It was kind of an epic fail.  First off, I procrastinated forgot about wrapping our books until December 12.  No problem, I figured it would just be the 12 Days of Christmas!  And...it probably would have worked.  Except Lincoln only likes to read books that he loves.  Try anything else with this kid, he will shake his head and shout "NO" (which often sounds like "doe") and throw the book aside.  I think we had two or three books in the whole Christmas collection that he gave the time of day.  There was also the slight problem that several nights we had already put Lincoln to bed and realized....we never gave him a book today.  Oops.  However, we did learn that the child really enjoys ripping open presents.  After opening one book (and tossing it aside), he would just run back and point at the stack, wishing to open another.  We'll give the book advent another try next year - I'm hoping it goes better then!

And now - here are Lincoln's Top Books in December 2012!

1. I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown!  This is a fabric book that I sewed for Lincoln last Christmas.  Last year, he wouldn't even look at it - this year we at least got to read half of it to him.  I consider that progress.  I don't know that the fabric version is available for purchase anywhere; I think I bought the fabric at Jo-Ann.

2. Biscuit's Pet & Play Christmas.  This was probably his favorite of the Christmas advent books - and probably just because it features a puppy.  Puppies are a big hit around here.  No that does not mean we are getting a dog.  It's a fun little interactive board book.

3. A Christmas Carol.  This is a title in my new favorite board book series from BabyLit.  This version of A Christmas Carol is a Colors Primer and features a different character or story element paired with a color on each page.  Example:  Silver Chains.  If you're a fan of classic literature, please check out this whole series.  They are awesome.

4. Peek-a-Boo, I Love You.  This lift-a-flap book is in serious danger of getting ripped to pieces, since he loves it right now.  The last page features a mirror so baby can see himself in the book, but I can't get Lincoln to look at it. Ha!

5. Goodnight Moon.  I love, love, love that this is one of Lincoln's favorite books right now!  We have started reading it every night before bed and I love the cuddles.  He figured out that he likes this book because it has pictures with clocks.  Seriously.  Of all the ridiculous things.

6. Little Blue Truck.  I think I may have featured this book before, but we found the board book version at Target and gave it to him for Christmas.  He.loves.it.  We read it at least two or three times a day.

7. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Goofy Baby.  This month's reading list would definitely not be complete if it did not feature the current obsession of Mickey Mouse.  I requested every Mickey Mouse Clubhouse board book our library owns.  And they are all popular around here.

8. Where are the Missing Leaves?  Another Mickey Mouse book - this one is a lift-the-flap and was already torn in a few places when we checked it out from the library.  It's living on top of our piano until it is returned to prevent further damage.

9. Is that Mickey?  Definitely one of the most-read books this month!  It's all about how Mickey's friends are planning him a celebration, but they can't find him!  I'll probably buy this one for our collection if he continues to enjoy the library copy.

10. Mickey's Book of Trucks.  This book is available on Amazon, but I found it in the $1 bin at Target a few months ago!  We gave Lincoln this one for Christmas, along with a small plush Mickey, and they have been a big hit.  This book just has pictures of trucks with the name of each one on each page.  Nothing fancy, but since it is a combination of two of his very favorite things on this earth, it is extremely popular!

11. God Loves You Very Much.  This giant VeggieTales board book has been picked up several times this week.  I am kind of surprised he likes it, it has a lot of words compared to some of his other favorites, but he has let Andrew read it all the way through several times.

12. The Berenstain Bears: Treat Others Kindly.  I think it is great that the recent Berenstain Bear stories feature valuable lessons for kids, with Bible verses to back them up.  This 3-in-1 Book Collection contains stories that teach about forgiveness, gossiping, and respecting your elders.  I'll be honest, Lincoln won't sit through this entire book yet - but we are working on it!  And something fun that I love about this book?  In the third story, Papa Bear is wearing Honey Bear in a carrier.  Babywearing exists in children's literature - woohoo!

Lincoln's Reading Corner November 2012

 
Wow, I can't believe it's already time for another installment of our reading corner!  This month, I have to admit that books have not been as big a priority.  While I was still at the end of pregnancy, I lost motivation to encourage finding new books to read.  Trying to do better now that there is room for Lincoln to sit on my lap again!  Regardless, we did add a few new favorites.  Here are Lincoln's Top 5 Books in November 2012!

1. Toot! Toot!  This book is from the $1 section at Target (Andrew purchased it probably a month ago).  It is literally the best book in our collection right now.  We have memorized it from reading so much - it's only 4 pages long.  Andrew has even invented actions to go along with each page and we all have to participate.  This is our go-to book during diaper changes, tantrums, etc.  And sometimes we'll just randomly quote it to entertain him.  The train is at the station.... Allll aboard! 

2. My Little Book of Trucks, Trains & Tractors.  We were given this book as a hand-me-down from a friend this month, and it has been a big hit.  It seems like a lot of the car/truck books out there just feature the same vehicles over and over again.  This one has some interesting and different trucks, trains, and tractors to see.  I would give examples but as I am writing this, Lincoln has apparently stashed this book somewhere in the house that I can't think to look.

3. The Truck Book.  Another book that joined our collection this month - this is a Little Golden Super Shape Book.  Normally I don't let Lincoln have books with paper pages because I don't trust him to not rip them yet - but he's done pretty well with this one so far!  This book features interesting trucks such as a bakery truck, telephone truck, snowplow, and more.

4. Two Bad Mice.  This is a lift-the-flap book from LeapFrog based on the original story by Beatrix Potter.  I'm not sure why Lincoln is obsessed with this book, maybe he just wants to be naughty like the two bad mice?  Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca don't really cause that much trouble, so I guess it's all right.

5.  Noah's Ark.  This is in the same collection as All Things Bright and Beautiful and The Good Shepherd (both featured in October).  It features pop-up flaps and Lincoln enjoys seeing all the different animals, and the places Noah goes to find them.

Lincoln's Reading Corner October 2012

Did you catch last month's Reading Corner?  When I wrote that post, I assumed that the next installment would contain all of the same books - we read them that much!  But it turns out, the selection has actually changed up quite a bit!  So without further ado - here are Lincoln's Top 8 Books in October 2012!

1. The Berenstain Bears New Baby.  I requested this book from the library since it is about welcoming a little sister into the family!  It has not been Lincoln's top choice, but he has let me read it a few times.  I always try to compare Small Bear to Lincoln - maybe he's making the correlation that he, too, is going to have a baby sister?  Yeah, probably not.  But I'll keep trying!

2. Old MacDonald Had a Farm.  This book is from a 4-board-book collection - I have no idea where we got it. It has little pop-up flaps on every page with all of the different animals on Old MacDonald's farm.  Lincoln thinks it's pretty great.

3. All Things Bright and Beautiful.  This is another from a (different) 4-board-book collection.  This one contains the first couple lines of lyrics to the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful and also features pop-up flaps on every page.  This is probably Lincoln's very favorite of all the books this month!  I can't tell you how many times we have read this!

4. Little Bee Finger Puppet Book.  This book is cute - it features a little bee finger puppet that you can use to interact with your little one while reading.  This one is especially popular around here at bedtime, when he is exhausted and needs a distraction to get through the ordeal of putting on pj's.  I just discovered that this book is part of a series...may be adding Little Puppy or Little Mouse to our stocking stuffer list!

5.  Where Does It Park?  This book was a summer reading program prize this year and I am so glad we chose this one!  It has been a favorite for months, I just forgot to put it on the September list.  It is a simple board book that asks Where does a car park?  Where does a train park?  Where does a bus park?  You get the idea.  Andrew and I both have it memorized.

6.  The Good Shepherd.  This is in the same collection as All Things Bright and Beautiful (above).  Also featuring pop-up flaps, it's the story of a shepherd who goes searching for a little lost lamb.  He makes quite the journey, as he looks everywhere from his barn to the desert.  Lincoln always grins when we get to the end and the sheep is found!

7.  The Lord is My Shepherd (Little Golden Books).  This Little Golden Book is a picture representation of the 23rd Psalm.  Maybe Lincoln thinks shepherds are awesome, since he randomly found this book (and the previous one) amidst the hundreds of books in our house and keeps insisting that we read them?

8.  Little Lion's Bible.  This fun book has a furry lion on the cover, which makes it a great book for little ones like Lincoln!  Each page is a short version of a Bible story - featuring everything from Creation to Daniel to Jonah.  I know this one will stay in our collection for many, many years to come.

Lincoln's Reading Corner: September 2012

Lincoln has never been that much for reading.  He has always liked books - they just haven't been his choice form of entertainment.  Then one day, within the last few weeks, he decided that looking at a book while having his diaper changed made life more bearable.  And since then, I've been noticing a lot more quiet moments where he will sit with a book and "read" it to himself.  He is also bringing books to us much more frequently, and insisting that we read them over and over.  Since he is the child of two librarians who own more books than we care to admit...we are pretty excited.

Lincoln has a vast collection of books to choose from, but we are pretty consistently reading the same handful over and over and over again.  I'm holding out hope that eventually all of our books get the attention they deserve.

With a toddler, things seem to change on a moment-by-moment basis, so I thought it would be fun to keep track of Lincoln's favorite books each month.  They may end up being the same for years on end - who knows!  But we'll give it a try.  So here are Lincoln's Top 9 Books in September 2012!

1. Clifford's Opposites.  This one for some reason is especially popular during diaper changes.  Lincoln loves dogs and puppies.

2. Winnie the Pooh: Board Book Collection. We have a set of 12 of these little square board books.  And they are loved.  Two of them, in fact, were lovingly dragged out onto our deck and accidentally left in the rain.  He still reads them even though they are a little bit waterlogged now. I can't find this exact set on Amazon, but this one is similar.

3. Pooh's ABC.  This is an older book that I probably picked up at a rummage sale.  It has a rhyming text and he loves it!

4. I Love Trains!  This book is currently checked out from our local library, but we will be purchasing a copy very soon.  It's in the same series as book #5 and my-goodness-we-read-them-all-day-long.

5. I Love Trucks!  This one started off as a library checkout, but I finally returned it and bought our own copy.  Andrew and I both can recite this book in our sleep.  It's another rhyming book and is definitely the overall favorite in our house.

6. Usborne Touchy-Feely Cars. This is a large chunky board book with lots of great textures for little ones to touch.  Sometimes we read this book six times in a row!

7.  Little Blue Truck Leads the Way.  Of the nine books listed here, this is the only one that has paper pages (everything else is in board book form) - so I have to keep it away from him to prevent the pages from ripping.  But regardless of this - it has been the most popular book for the past few days.  I have it memorized already.  He loves it!  Great little story about a little blue truck that visits the big city - since I love NYC, I enjoy the illustrations even more.

8. I'm Just a Jealous Monster.  I picked this book up in a $1 bin at Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts several months ago.  I thought he would like the googly eyes on the monster.  Nope - he likes looking at the cars and trains that the monster plays with during the story.  Andrew reads this one to him a lot and has a great "monster voice."

9.  This Ol' Man.  This is the most random book.  It's the classic song - except the lyrics are super weird.  I've never heard of the old man playing knick-knack on a kangaroo.  Or on a shore.  Or in a pigpen.  Am I just sheltered?  Are these the real lyrics? Who knows.
