Hanna Andersson: Welcome to Kansas City!

Where are my Kansas City readers? I know there are some of you lurking out there! I'm so excited, you guys, because there is a new Hanna Andersson store open at Town Center Plaza in Leawood. I had actually never heard of Hanna until my friend Stephanie pointed me their direction when I was working on my Toddler Girl Fall Fashion Roundup earlier this year, but once I took a quick look at their online shop, I was hooked. Organic cotton, glorious colors, and sweet designs that let kids just be kids? Yes, please.

To say I was excited when I was invited to be a blogger hostess for the Leawood store Grand Opening Event would be the understatement of the year. I was able to invite some friends to attend a special pre-sale event the night before the store's grand opening and it was such a blast!

I had the chance to chat with Adam Stone, the CEO of Hanna Andersson, during the event. He shared with me the company's background story - how one mom (originally from Sweden) decided to create a brand of clothing that would last for a long, long time - as is customary with most things in Swedish culture. The cotton clothing is designed in vibrant colors that don't fade regardless of how many times they are washed, and they're intended to be clothes that can be handed down from child to child. The company was started in a garage in Portland, Oregon 30 years ago and has grown immensely since that time! I'm so excited that we now have our very own Hanna store here in KC!

You know that one clothing item in your wardrobe that you love because it is so soft and comfortable you can just chill? Everyone has something like that, right? They're the clothes that you run to put on as soon as you walk in the door from work at night, or the ones you don't change out of when you're planning to just stay home and organize all day. Hanna's clothes for kids are all like that - from the very first day you buy them. They're the softest cotton I think I have ever felt in my life!

From the casual play dresses (with which I am obsessed), to the amazing adorable collection of holiday pajamas, every single piece of clothing sends a message that it will become a wardrobe staple. And it's a worthy message: Hanna Andersson guarantees that you'll love their clothing and that they'll last - or you can bring it back, anytime. There's no return deadline!

As if everything I've already shared isn't enough, Hanna offers a line of Star Wars pajamas right now that are (for this geek) to die for....seriously. Striped Darth Vader jammies (they also come in pink)? And Star Wars in Christmas sweater design? I almost can't handle it.

The sizing works a little bit different than the American standard, but it's really easy to figure out as long as you know your child's general proportions. The friendly employees at the Hanna store were handing out size charts to each shopper like the one pictured below.

I think I could have spent an entire paycheck in this store without blinking an eye, but since my budget wouldn't look kindly on that idea, I managed to pick out a few favorites to bring home to my kids. Some of my favorites? The Heathered Henley for Lincoln and the It's a Playdress, It's a Daydress for Addie. I had such a hard time narrowing down which dress I liked best! They are all adorable.

I know that there will be sales this weekend for Black Friday, so if you're planning to look for kids clothing, make sure Hanna Andersson is on your list!

I can't wait to give my kids their Christmas Eve pajamas this year - not only will they look adorable in my Christmas morning photos, they'll be super comfy too! I couldn't pass up the Red & Green Striped Organic Cotton Pajamas!

Addie is so far a huge fan of her Hanna Andersson clothing. The first time I put on her Lotsa Ruffles Dress, she declared "I'm beautiful!" and spent the next ten minutes twirling around. I love that it's one of her favorite outfits - because it's one of MINE, too! I can already tell that the quality is spectacular. This dress will hopefully be handed down to a little sister someday!

Yes, most of us are primarily excited about the miracle of a new life growing in our bellies - but the adorable clothes available for parents to choose these days are a definite perk!

My kids have always seemed to have more clothes than they really need, but now that they are getting older, the stash I bought when they were babies is starting to run out. When you have a newborn, you don't usually think about buying size 5 boy's clothing! So when I was given the opportunity to visit my local OshKosh B'gosh store to check out their winter clothing selection, I was all over it. OshKosh B'gosh is known for their adorable overalls and clothing in simple, classic designs - something that I love. My kids do have some clothing that features their favorite characters, but I am really migrating to the simpler pieces these days. You can't beat a classic!

The store was packed with clothing for the upcoming winter season and I feel that I was able to purchase a lot of the clothes my kids needed for winter all in one stop! I even managed to stock up on socks and hair accessories without breaking the budget!

 OshKosh B'gosh remains one of my go-to destinations for classy designs for my kids. I love that their designers are not striving to make kids grow up too fast - simple, comfy styles are really what works for little ones and they're experts at that.

I may have had a little too much fun updating Lincoln and Addie's wardrobes on this shopping trip! I was excited to add some classic shirts in white and gray for Addie, plus coordinating navy accents.

I'm loving stripes right now, so these shirts (one on clearance for a super great price) were a no-brainer! Addie's favorite color is pink, so I know these will see a lot of wear this winter!

For Lincoln, I picked out this great half-zip sweater. He doesn't have many dressy outfits because as a three-year-old boy, it seems unlikely that he will be motivated to look nice and keep his clothing in one piece. But this sweater is definitely durable enough to hold up to his rough antics.

I've noticed that all of the OshKosh pieces in our clothing collection have great durability. The items that my kids have outgrown were not placed in consignment or garage sale piles, but were added to my bins of smaller sized clothing in case we have more babies someday. I much prefer buying clothing that I know will last through multiple kids!

I spied a great collection of holiday outfits and adorable pajamas when I was shopping at OshKosh B'Gosh earlier this month. Pajamas are my weakness...seriously, I just love them. Lincoln thinks the fire chief pj's are pretty cool, and Addie has been obsessed with owls since her first birthday party, so they were a perfect choice!

OshKosh B'gosh wants shoppers to #GiveHappy this holiday season and I'm doing that just by celebrating the little moments with my kids! This is something I try to do anyway, but it's great to have a reminder. Little things like giving hugs or kisses, reading extra stories at bedtime, or letting little hands help when I'm cooking set a happier tone in our home - and what mom doesn't want that?

Doing //
...all the things. Seriously. SO. MANY. THINGS. I have lists coming out of my ears and I'm losing my mind just a little bit. Thankfully, over the weekend I had a couple of kid-free hours and my kitchen table no longer looks quite as bad as that photo above.

...some backyard therapy in an attempt for everyone to play happily while Mom gets some work done. It's been...reasonably successful so far.

...a lot of Etsy shop marketing. I think it may be working - I had four sales last week!


Planning //
...Addie's second birthday party. I've only started the initial planning stages for this, but since it's barely a month away, it seems likely that I should get busy.

Holiday Gift Guide arrivals! Oh, to be a blogger's child.

...the Holiday Gift Guide for the blog! I haven't done a gift guide since 2011, when I was a full-time coupon blogger. So this is fun (and a little overwhelming, since it's been three years)! If you own a business or an Etsy shop or anything like that, read more about how to be included in my guide!

...a mini vacation next month. We loved Silver Dollar City last Christmas and had so much fun exploring Branson as a family this summer that we just can't pass up the opportunity to go again.


Remembering // 
...to use my real camera sometimes. All the photos in this post are blurry because they were taken with my phone. I want to get back to keeping a daily Project Life scrapbook and I know that I will prefer "real" photos for that. I still think phone cameras are great. But expensive cameras are nice, too.

...that having a meal plan is helpful. I've done slightly better this past week at having some sort of intentions as far as dinner and even that has made life a little easier. If I actually cooked every night, wouldn't it be fantastic? Cooking is not my strong suit. There are so many other things I would rather be doing. I can't be the only one who feels like this, right?


Wishing //
...that I were planning a trip to Disney World. Hey, I can dream.

...for more hours in the day. I sort of feel like this is going to be a lifelong desire.

Loving //
...the way Lincoln and Addie actually play together sometimes. It was more than a little crazy having two kids under age two, but they are really starting to be able to entertain themselves and each other with imaginative games and giggling races. Now - just because they can entertain themselves does not mean that they always choose to do so. A lot of time is still spent fussing and whining in our home. Sigh.

Literary Advocacy with Out of Print Clothing

I don't consider myself to be the biggest fashionista out there. In fact, if you compare me to a fashion blogger, you'd probably have no choice but to laugh at my style choices. My wardrobe consists of items that are practical for real-life mom grunge work - you know, playing with tiny plastic animals, serving up cracker and raisin snacks, and of course - reading dozens and dozens of books out loud every day.

In my life before kids, I worked full time at my local library, planning children's clubs and parties and helping connect kids with books that I knew they would love. I'm so excited for the years ahead of introducing my own children to great works of literature - starting, of course, with some kids classics.

When I stumbled across Out of Print Clothing, I thought I had died and gone to librarian heaven. This fantastic company takes the artwork from classic (and often out of print) editions of literature and designs shirts, tote bags, phone cases, greeting cards, and so much more from them!

I'm all for the digital age (hello, I'm writing this blog and have sent about 1,000 tweets today alone), but I don't want to ever lose the printed book. There's something magical about curling up with a ragged copy of your favorite novel to read it for the twenty-seventh time. You can see the tear stains on certain pages or find a spot of spaghetti sauce from that time as a child that you refused to put the book down during dinner. Books - real, actual, physical books - are amazing, you guys.

Out of Print Clothing sent us a couple of shirts to review, and we could not possibly love them more. It was agonizing to choose just two favorites from their large collection, but eventually I settled on the Charlotte's Web shirt for myself (this story may have been my first obsession, at the age of three) and the Mike Mulligan shirt for Lincoln.

Lincoln is consistently wearing size 4T and 5T clothing right now, and this size 4/5 shirt is a perfect fit for him! I ordered based on the measurements of the size chart for myself - my shirt fits, but is maybe a hair too big after it has been worn/stretched a few times. I think my next order will be for a size smaller. Don't get me wrong - I still love it, and wear it all the time and have no issues. Due to the tees being soft and worn like a well-read book, they stretch pretty easily. They are a cotton/poly blend and are so comfy!

When Addie noticed my shirt, she gasped and said "Wilbur, mama! And Charlotte right there." She's never seen this book cover, though she has watched the animated film a couple of times. That goes to show that a classic is truly a classic, don't you think? I've received multiple compliments from strangers when I have worn the tee to run errands, too!

You can shop by book title, author, or clothing style on the website and there are so many great choices - Pride & Prejudice, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and many, many others. I'm in love with the new kid sized Goodnight Moon and Madeline tees! To be perfectly honest, I kind of wish I had enough of these shirts that I could wear one every day. If I still worked at the library, these would absolutely be my uniform.

I can't wait to read Charlotte's Web (and so many other great stories) to my kids.

Fast asleep during church yesterday.

Thinking about // The 3,000 books that need to be sorted and find a new place to reside in our crammed house. What costumes to make for our family for Halloween. How I need to weed the yard and cut some mega trees out of our fence line. How delicious Lindt chocolate tastes, especially late at night while blogging. How I wish Addie would decide nurseries are okay so I can quit hating them.

Listening to // The Broadway cast recording of Beauty & and Beast. The movie soundtrack to Oklahoma. By Faith by the Galkin Evangelistic Team.

Watching // Anne of Green Gables. It is every single bit as beautiful as I recalled and I feel that all entertainment should be this heartwarming and breathtakingly brilliant. The scope for the imagination in average television is sorely lacking.

Thankful for // A lower-than-expected quote to fix up our roof before winter (such a huge answer to prayer). The opportunity to homeschool my children, even if I have yet to achieve a balance even for preschool. My parents' and in-laws' dryers, since mine is not working.

Enjoying // Sprouted organic cereal (not an affiliate link). Because I'm battling tooth decay (sigh), I'm trying to avoid all grains that are not sprouted because of their high phytic acid content. I enjoy eating healthy veggies and meat, but sometimes...you just need a bowl of cereal.

Making me happy // Shopping for food at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. If anyone could inspire these brands to bring a store to my hometown, I would be super appreciative. Right now, I visit on Wednesdays when we're making a trek to our awesome chiropractor anyway.

Okay, so we aren't ALL quite that excited about Trader Joe's shopping.

Loving // That Lincoln has slept in his bed all night more than half of the nights in the past week. The fresh flowers on my table (scheming about buying more). Peach and strawberry smoothies. Blissful, beautiful sleep...which is where I am headed now, friends.

Last year, I put together a baby girl fall fashion round up and said to myself, this is so fun! I'll write these posts all the time! Here we are, a year and a month later and I'm finally making my second round up. I will let you decide if this is just a better late than never scenario or a fall-clothes-are-the-cutest-so-no-one-cares situation. Either way, here are my top picks for fall fashion for toddler girls this year.

Just Between Friends Overland Park Sale + My #BestDeal

What do you do when you have one income, two kids, and a desire to dress those kids in cute fashions? There are a couple of options.

1) You overspend and end up in financial trouble.
2) You cart your kids around to thrift stores and garage sales and snag a piece here or there, but have endless wars about getting in and out of the car so much.
3) You shop at kid's consignment sales.

I choose to not lose all of my money or all of my sanity, and consistently go with option 3. Consignment sales are - to put it mildly - freaking awesome. Not only are they a magnificent way to recap some of your cost when your kids have outgrown their clothing and toys, they offer shoppers the chance to buy everything you could ever need for a child in one location. Most moms tend to shop for the upcoming season (which is why you'll find sales happening at the beginning of spring and fall), but you can also scour larger sizes and start a stash of items so that the financial burden of clothing your children is not so large as they age.

Yesterday, I met up with a fantastic group of local bloggers for lunch and shopping, courtesy of Just Between Friends of Overland Park and Lees Summit. We had the chance to preview the Overland Park fall sale, and it is stuffed to overflowing with amazing deals for kids of all ages. I set out with a mission to find the #BestDeal at the sale - but I didn't have much of a plan. I have a decent stockpile of clothing for both kids for the upcoming season, and heaven knows neither of them actually needs any more toys.

So, my goal was just to find anything that I could not pass up.

I started off in the winter clothing section - yes, an entire section dedicated to just coats and snow apparel for kids! Lincoln loved the snow last winter and Addie is definitely going to be more interested than she was now that she can move a little better, so I know they're going to beg and plead with me to let them out in the snow this year. I found a pair of size 4/5 snow pants in like-new condition for $5. What a deal!

Honestly, I barely even scratched the surface of all the available clothing. I looked through some of the 2T and 3T clothing and found a few sweet dresses for Addie for this fall/winter. It can be very difficult to have restraint when you are shopping at a consignment sale because there are soooo many cute things - but the good news is, since you are saving money by shopping consignment, you can buy more than your budget might allow otherwise.

There is always an extreme abundance of toys. This sale was particularly nice because it was divided by toy type and/or character. There was a section of Little People (pictured above), Mickey Mouse, Disney Princess, Dora the Explorer, Thomas the Tank Engine, American Girl, and so many more. For those who head to a sale looking for a specific character, this means a whole lot less searching and digging - yay!

But, as at most sales, my favorite section was the books and educational materials. Maybe it's the former librarian in me, or the homeschooling planner - but either way, there's something about the draw of pre-loved books that gets me super excited. You just never know what you might find - like this Beauty & the Beast graphic novel for $1.00.

And then, this really vintage The Story of Star Wars book for $1.50!

My husband was pretty excited when I showed this book to him.

For the kids, I found several really great titles to add to our library. Each of these titles were significantly under retail - the Usborne touchy-feely That's Not My Tractor was $1.50. If you don't already love Usborne, you should get yourself some, stat. My kids were obsessed with The Potty Train when we checked it out from the library (after I lifted our library book ban), and they love seek-and-find and lift-the-flap books, so the others were a no-brainer. We'll use the Christmas Little People book in our Christmas advent tradition this year.

By the time I was done shopping, I had gathered three giant bags full of amazing things to bring home with me. Definitely more than I had intended to purchase, but I have no regrets. I just may not be allowed at the next consignment sale since we definitely have everything we need for Christmas!

It's taken me a bit to decide what my #BestDeal from the Overland Park Just Between Friends sale was - in fact, I couldn't narrow it down to just one. So here are my four favorite finds!

Brain Quest Preschool - 2 sets - retail price $23.90, I paid $5.00.
Plush Disney Baby Lady - retail price $22.95, I paid $4.00.
